OMG We’re Cutting the Cable!

Getting out of debt is something that people are saying more than often, right? Well yes everyone does want this but there are different things you can do to help lower your current bills so that you can get out of debt much faster! That’s right, I cut that cable cord faster than cutting paper. I was spending hundreds of dollars on cable and only watching about 7 channels at most on a weekly basis. Sometimes not even that many. It just depending on how hectic my life is that day. I did however keep my internet with my provider. My bill went from $138.61 to $49.99! I’m not sure about you but there is plenty of things I can think of doing with that extra $88.62. There has been no looking back!

So Are We Just Gonna Watch Local Channels?

HA! That lasted about a day or less! I have a family of 5 and my oldest child is 8. There is no way I am going to be able to make dinner, help with homework individually and still provide the others with attention. I already had Amazon Prime Student but mainly for the free 2-day shipping. (Also, having Amazon Prime Student is a discounted rate that Amazon offers which only cost $59.00 annually or $6.49 a month. WAIT but this is AFTER a free trial!! Well now I looked into what else they offered. Can you believe they have an entire Prime Video selection? This area has movies, TV shows and also premium channels that you can subscribe to for a certain price per month. Oh yes, I rushed and ordered me a Firestick the first chance I could! I had heard of streaming channels before but never had experienced it past Netflix or Hulu. Now I have an entire area where I already have paid and can purchase/rent other shows or movies as I please.

The Firestick and all it supplies

Now I know you’re thinking I could’ve just purchased a smart tv(have one of these) or just a Roku but I wanted a Firestick. I have never looked at television the same again. I now own 2 Firesticks and a TV with a built in Roku device. This way I do not have to switch the Firestick from room to room. All movies or shows I watch are not on Amazon Prime, so I chose to subscribe to Starz at times. This only costs my $8.99 a month. The good thing is you can cancel this at anytime and not be charged for another month until I choose to restart the subscription.

Streaming TV Services

Amazon Prime and Starz do not provide all cable shows that I am use to watching. Since I did miss watching some cable channels I subscribed to Slingtv. This was a great streaming service. I had them for about 2 years and I loved them! The rate stayed the same and I was also on a promotion. I paid around $37.99. Now I switched to Directv Now since I receive a discount with my current phone service provider (will discuss in another post) Now with this service I get more channels and my cost is $20.00 a month.

I would highly recommend anyone who is trying to lower cost to obtain a Firestick and cut that cable! If you have Amazon Prime then you should definitely look into getting one or the Firetv. There are many other benefits to having Amazon Prime as well such as Free 2-day shipping, unlimited music streaming and unlimited reading on any device just to name a few. This is just one change I did to begin saving during my Get Out of Debt and into Paradise journey.

I hope this gives you the excitement to get started on reducing those bills to put more to your debt or savings. Or both!

  • Wow! Something I’ll definitely look more into: the fire stick. Do you know, are these available in Australia?

    • Hi Jasmin,
Thank you for reading my post! I looked into your question and Amazon did inform me that you can only use the Fire Stick TV Basic edition in Australia. You just need to have an HDMI port for connection.
